Man electrocuted to death while trying to vandalize PHCN transformer

The residents and visitors of Akanchawa Udenwa area of Owerri, Imo state capital were yesterday shocked to see the body of a middle-aged suspected vandal electrocuted while trying to steal from one of their transformers

Although the residents couldn’t ascertain the number of vandals that came for the operation nor the exact time of the night they stormed the transformer, they had maintained they woke up to behold a lifeless body close to the transformer.

Further investigations also revealed that the suspected vandal wanted to take advantage of the periodic but prolonged power outage in the area to carry out his evil plan, but unluckily for him, power was suddenly restored to the facility.

Confirming the ugly and shameful incident, Mr. Ositadinma Ugwuafor, who doubles as a PHCN Senior Manager and Public Relation officer said it wasn’t the first time they had such case in that area but the second time a vandal was being electrocuted in action.

According to him, “In the instant case, the vandal had succeeded in cutting off the up-riser cable of the transformer, as well as the earth copper wire worth thousands of Naira. A long dagger and hack saw were recovered close to the lifeless body.”

The Officer also lamented that aside the problem of ageing facilities, another major headaches of PHCN was the constant vandalization of its facilities by criminals. He added that the death of the vandal had already thrown the area into more days of darkness.

“We are determined to serve the public, but we are continually faced with acts of vandalism. The inordinate ambition of some misguided elements in our society to get rich quick lures them to these damnable acts.”
