All activities in the prestigious University of Jos has been disrupted as students protest the recent increase in school fees. The students expressed their anger as Tuition which was originally N12, 000 was increased to N27, 500, while accommodation fee increased from N4, 500 to N12, 500.
The protest brought free flow of traffic to a halt on the ever busy Jos-Bauchi roads, as students were seen carrying placards with words like ‘many parents cannot afford the increase’,, ‘Daylight rape’, ‘our parents are government workers and have not been paid’ among others.
President of the student union,Miss Nanlop Maya stated that the increase amounted to “commercialisation of education and a demonstration of ‘the insensitivity of the school management to their plight.”
Maya and some members of the student union tried to reach an agreement with the management but all efforts proved abortive. The registrar, Mr Jilli dandam, has promised to relate the students’ grievances with the management.
